First Video Game Recording Session

I was able to check off a big item on my bucket list when I was cast to do voices for the Sands of Aura video game last week. It was such a joy to do, and I had a ton of fun. I think that comes through in the video above. There is a longer video of this part of the session on my YouTube channel. [WARNING: the video will have some minor spoilers if you watch more than a minute of it…nothing that ruins the game, I don’t think, but still, fair warning.)

In all, I did nine voices for Sands of Aura, including the Big Bad Evil Guy…bad guys are so much fun to do the voices for.

First, I got to head up and see the folks at Edge Studio, which is always a highlight. To be greeted by Susanne and Laura and Anoush with smiles and hugs when I step off the elevator is such a great feeling.

Then I get to work with Kevin Schormann, who engineered all of my demos, and I’ve had the pleasure of working with for the some of the demos I’ve directed…he is the definition of professional and a master of his craft. This was the first time we got to work together in this capacity. I truly hope it’s the first of many.

And! The directors from Chashu Entertainment, Mike Shistik and Zach Flynn, were great. The notes they offered to guide me in my performance were helpful and let me play while meeting their needs and expectations (at least, I hope I did).

To top it off, I got to score some Cool Uncle Points (tm) by getting permission to bring my 12-year-old nephew into the studio to watch. From his side of the glass, I’m sure it got boring, but afterwards he seemed pretty stoked. Not gonna lie…being able to impress that kid is something I always strive for, so I’m super happy he liked it.

Getting a little “inside baseball” with the session, especially with the character in the video, it’s probably not hard to hear the Mark Hamill influence there. His version of the Joker made such a huge impression on me, that I can easily include him in my list of voice actor heroes alongside Mel Blanc, Frank Welker, and Steve Blum. I hope he doesn’t mind the tribute/homage.

The game is scheduled to be released this October through Steam, and you can get early access and notifications on the game page. I will definitely be picking this game up.
